Beginners guide to blogging

In my earlier blog entry on “Money splasher – This is all about money, honey !“, I said I will speak about various topics related to this. One of them of course is Blogging, which is turning out to be my favorite pastime too. Before we get into the details, lets spend a few minutes understanding the basics of blogging.

Lets tackle this one by one. Ok ?

First things first. So what is a blog, anyways ?

Webster’s New Millennium English Dictionary defines blog as “an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page. Also called a Weblog or Web log”

My assessment says that this is a fair definition, to start with. But people all over the web world, have monetized this to such an extent that this has become an integral part of communication itself. A blog is no longer just a personal diary, it has become a news site, an ecommerce site, an information repository site, a site for tips and tricks etc. Watch this video for more insight into what is a blog

Now that we know what is blog, lets understand who is a blogger.

A blogger is someone who continually contributes his content to the web world through his blogsite. I have observed that most of the bloggers talk on niche subjects. As for example, my blog – yes the one that you are reading – is a niche site in itself. Niche because it is concentrating on a niche topic i.e. art of making and managing money. Having said that, there are bloggers who write on whatever comes to their mind at that point in time – they mix politics, current affairs, sports etc and provide an all in one content, which is also unique to an extent.

In my view, concentrating on a niche area makes more sense. I say this because if your content is all over the place, then the readers might get confused. If you are focused, then your readers will appreciate it more and visit your blogsite, more often.

So, we were talking about who is a blogger, right ?. So now lets jump on to the next one – what is a blogsite. This is pretty simple.

A blog site is nothing but a website which is the platform for the bloggers to post their blogs. These blog sites are like any other websites. The only difference is that these are hosted on blogging platforms like Wordpress, Blogger.com, Typepad etc. which has got specialized software to record blogs in a chronological fashion and present them in a website. I will definitely be writing more on the blogging platform later. So watch this space !

In the next few posts, I will try to explain to you what are the various components that make a blog, the jargons associated with blog, the key differences between those jargons etc. Let me not clutter your brains at one go.
